Karimi Carpet: Haji Hamidullah Istalifi founded Karimi Carpets in 1977. The shop started small in Shahre and is now located in Kabul, Afghanistan. Haji first began his career selling handmade carpets for others. This inspired him to learn more about the tradition himself, so he began carpet knitting and designing. Haji has no formal education, but his carpetmaking skills are priceless. Haji now manages a team of carpetmakers knitting their way into global markets from the Acqcha, Jawjzjan, and Mazar provinces. Each carpet is hand-sewn and carefully assembled. Once each carpet passes a meticulous inspection, they are ready to be sold at Najibzarab market in Kabul as well as online through Aseel’s platform. Haji’s vision is for the business to grow into a globally recognized brand capturing Afghanistan’s roots while broadening the trajectory of where Afghan commerce is heading. As an Afghanistan-based company, sourcing materials and workers solely within the country sparks positive economic growth. Haji hopes to pave the way to the future while still honoring Afghan culture and traditions.
