Amu Handicraft
Amu Handicrafts – Empowering Afghan Women Through Tradition and Craft Founded by Suhila Ahadi, a passionate high school graduate, Amu Handicrafts is a vibrant young business rooted in Aikhanam Village, Dashti Qala, in Afghanistan’s Takhar Province. Since its inception in 2022, Amu Handicrafts has become a beacon of hope and empowerment for young women in the community, providing them with opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency. With a dedicated team of 25 talented young women, Suhila and her group breathe life into traditional Afghan handicrafts, transforming them into beautiful, market-ready creations. Despite only two years of operation, Amu Handicrafts has already established itself as a promising brand in sewing, tailoring, and embroidery. Each product—from food sheets and women’s and children’s clothing to scarves, handkerchiefs, kilims, and embroidered Yakhans—is lovingly handcrafted by this motivated team. Working with a unique blend of skill and passion, these artisans gather daily in their modest workshop, creating pieces that reflect both Afghan heritage and a commitment to excellence. Amu Handicrafts was inspired by a vision to provide meaningful employment and foster community among young Afghan women. Suhila and her team hope to expand their workspace and increase production to support even more women in Aikhanam Village. Their aim is to become a recognized brand, bringing traditional Afghan designs to local and international markets. Currently, the group operates with support from the Aga Khan Foundation and their partnership with ASEEL, Amu handicrafts is excited to bring their products to new audiences worldwide through online platforms. Amu Handicrafts is eager to collaborate with Aseel to bring their products to a broader audience. Through Aseel’s platform, they hope to showcase their handmade items to customers worldwide, sharing the beauty of Afghan craftsmanship and empowering even more young women. With this partnership, Amu Handicrafts envisions a bright future where Afghan traditions thrive, and women artisans play an essential role in building a better community.
