Aseel to help 15,000 children in Afghanistan
The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is escalating, and this time there is an alarming mortality rate of newborns. At the beginning of the year, the UN announced that if urgent action is not taken, one million Afghan children could die by the end of 2022. In mid-march, the UN shared a report on the high mortality rate caused by malnutrition and hunger-related issues. According to the UN, 13,000 newborn babies have died since January 2022 in Afghanistan. On average, that is 176 infants die every day in Afghanistan.
Aseel launched the Child Relief Grand Challenge in response to helping millions at risk of malnutrition and starvation. Aseel aims to help 15,000 children at risk of malnutrition in the next few months. Aseel's response to this emergency and the packages prepared to tackle this problem are designed with a team of medical experts. In an interview, the director of an international humanitarian organization in Afghanistan said that hospital wards are filled with malnourished children, "Children in the provinces – they are only skin on bones now – and I'm afraid this will only worsen.".
The Child Relief Grand Challenge is Aseel's direct response to saving lives. The Aseel team continues activity on the ground with over 200 local volunteers helping locate, contact, and deliver aid packages to families in urgent need of help. Aseel raised 123 of the target 1818 packages within a week.
The political shift in Afghanistan, the destruction of the economy, and the halt of the Afghanistan central banks' assets have left 95% of the Afghan population lacking access to enough food every day. In this time of need, Aseel calls upon the international community to show solidarity, start campaigns and make donations.
