Afghanistan, ravaged by four decades of war, is one of the world’s poorest and according to scientists is one of the worst prepared to face the consequences of global warming. Torrential heavy rains caused huge damage in Baghlan, Takhar, Badakshan, Ghor, Herat, Zabul, Kandahar and other provinces throughout Afghanistan, a country racked by poverty and heavily dependent on agriculture. Of these mentioned provinces, Baghlan is affected the most where 311 people are killed, 2011 houses destroyed and 2800 houses damaged. Reports also indicated that at 20 people have been killed in Takhar and 2 in Badakhshan province. Previous week, floods had claimed lives of more than 50 people in Zabul and Kandahar provinces. Reports state that the rescue operations are underway to find those swept away by floods and who might be under debris and mud. Also, social media posted videos showcase dozens of people gathered in front of Baghlan hospital looking for their loved ones. The devastation has left thousands homeless, many in urgent need of shelter and emergency food supplies.
