About Campaign
From Mountains to Makeshift Camps is a humanitarian campaign led by travel writer and expedition leader Nicole Smoot, known for exploring and showcasing Afghanistan’s majestic landscapes and resilient people.
Through her treks in the Wakhan Corridor, her stories from the heart of Kabul, and her lens on the remote corners of the country, Nicole has offered a different narrative of Afghanistan — one filled with awe, complexity, and connection.
But today, she’s showing another side of the story.
Thousands of Afghan families are being forcibly returned from Pakistan, dropped at the border with nothing. The same country that once welcomed Nicole with hospitality and wonder is now the site of extreme hardship for its own people.
Displaced mothers, children, and elders are sleeping in desert camps without shelter, food, or safety.
This campaign exists to help them — not with pity, but with solidarity.
Through your support, we will provide:
Returnee Shelter Packages for those living in tents or sleeping rough
Meal Boxes to feed families who haven’t had a real meal in days
Hygiene Kits for women facing sanitary and hygiene issues
Nicole has shown you the strength of this land and its people. Now, she asks you to stand with them — not as travelers, but as humans.

Nicole Smoot is a travel writer, photographer, and expedition leader behind @the.adventures.of.nicole. She is one of the few Western women to extensively explore Afghanistan, leading treks through its mountains, living among its communities, and capturing its hidden beauty.
Her storytelling reframes the world’s most misunderstood places — revealing the courage, culture, and humanity that thrive within them.
Now, as an ambassador for Aseel’s #M1M campaign, Nicole is using her voice not just to share Afghanistan’s beauty, but to support its people in their time of greatest need.
