About Campaign

When we bleed, most of us put on a bandage and it stops. But for Hasib, who has severe hemophilia A, his blood does not clot. He bleeds, often spontaneously, into his joints, muscles and organs. As blood accumulates in his joints, it erodes the bone and causes deformity. He has a paralyzed hand and has also been unable to walk for the last 6 months. The treatment is an infusion of Factor VIII but it is very expensive and his family is poor. There is little help in Herat, where he lives. Day by day he suffers.

I am a retired special ed teacher who has volunteered locally with refugees for 10 years. I also volunteer on-line with Heartsand HomesforRefugees.org. Through them, I was assigned to help a family in Herat who have applied to relocate to the U.S. through the SIV program. This program processes people who worked for the US during the war there. In my contact with this family, I learned that their oldest son has severe hemophilia A, a genetic disorder that causes spontaneous bleeds, damage and severe pain in the joints. I have sent money to help with treatment for the last 3 years but it is woefully inadequate.
