LAWANG was established in 2019 and is a social enterprise that focuses on the promotion and production of Afghan handicraft and fashion designing. LAWANG is the only official member of NEST Guild from Afghanistan with over 2,000 registered artisans from around the globe. The motivation factor behind the creation of LAWANG was the long-term history of Afghan women artisans’ unemployment in the country; therefore, the founding team was committed to improve women and men artisans’ employment, reduce gender gaps within the clothing industry, empower women economically and psychologically, and promote Afghan clothing culture and handicrafts around the globe. The company aspires that Afghan traditions of clothing and fashion are alive and this rich culture reaches to the rest of the world. LAWANG’s name is derived from a Pashtu terminology and means clove which is a fragrant plant and was traditionally used by women as a clothing perfume. It is also a food additive to help cook delicious dishes. During its short history, LAWANG has partnered and worked with various humanitarian organizations, media organizations, women artists, and online platforms. Vision LAWANG’s vision is to ensure the Afghan traditions of clothing and fashion is alive and this rich culture is reached to the rest of the world. Mission LAWANG’s mission is to empower Afghan women through capacity building programs, create jobs and improve productivity of handmade products in the clothing industry. Objectives Furthermore, LAWANG’s objective is to increase women artisans’ participation in alternate employment opportunities. Empowerment of adolescent Afghan women and build self-confidence, equipment of women with mental development and inspirations, helping women become literate and future leaders, encouragement of women to improve their skills, helping the women to be self-sufficient and generate their own income and improvement of women’s living standards are the core values of LAWANG.
