In the mountains of Nuristan, entire families went to sleep on an ordinary night and woke to water tearing through their homes. By morning, more than 25 people were dead, over 85 lay injured, and hundreds more were still missing, not gone, not accounted for, just missing, which means hundreds of families are standing in the wreckage of their homes right now, waiting for news that may never come. Homes were flattened, shops and small hotels destroyed, and vehicles that were some families' only way of reaching help were swept away with everything else.Kabul Institute is calling on our community and everyone who believes Afghan lives deserve more than silence to act now. The mountains made this disaster worse, roads destroyed, help arriving too late for too many, but the mountains did not create the poverty that makes recovery so much harder here, and they did not dry up the funding that used to reach communities like this one. People did that, and people can undo it. A blanket, a tent, clean water, a stretcher that gets someone to help in time, these are not abstractions here.
