What is Our Grand Challenge?
The Republic of Turkey and Syria have been devastated by two major earthquakes on 6 February 2023. The earthquakes have caused widespread damage and the latest reports indicate that over 11,000 people have lost their lives, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
The situation in both countries is dire, with the infrastructure of the affected areas severely impacted. The roads have been closed, making it difficult for emergency responders and relief workers to reach those in need. The electricity and telecommunications networks have also been severely impacted, adding to the difficulties faced by rescue and recovery efforts.
The harsh winter conditions in the region are making the situation even more challenging. Temperatures are well below freezing, and the cold weather is putting an additional strain on the already stretched resources of rescue and relief organizations. The situation is particularly difficult for those who have lost their homes and are now homeless, as they are exposed to harsh weather conditions.
The people in the Republic of Turkey and Syria are in dire need of help and are calling on the international community to respond to this disaster. The country needs all the support it can get, from humanitarian aid to technical assistance, to help those affected by the earthquakes and to help the country begin the process of recovery. This campaign aims to gather funds that will be provided to the local administration to provide relief.

Identify and assist communities impacted by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria
Ensure the GC objectives are realistic and achievable
Methods
Step 1:
Identification
ASEEL transfers the funds to esteemed local authorities (in Turkey and Syria) actively working in the affected areas to aid those in need.
Step 2:
Coordination and Supply
The ASEEL team collaborates with the regional administration (in Turkey and Syria) to ensure relief packages are delivered to those in need.
Transparency and Accountability
All participants of the ASEEL Turkey and Syria Earthquake Grand Challenge, including technical contributors, campaign owners, partner organizations, and volunteers, will receive bi-weekly updates containing financial information and the number of relief packages being distributed. Furthermore, the financial records from each update will be made available publicly in real-time.
With a focus on transparency and accountability for every dollar spent, the Emergency Response team has created ASEEL ER V1.0. This version provides pre-registered Omid (Hope) IDs and Omid cards to track each beneficiary.
The ASEEL team is developing the second version, ASEEL ER V2.0, with two additional modules. The (Vendor Module) is designed for local supermarkets to distribute ASEEL food packages within the community, while the (Lifesavers Module) will allow pre-approved volunteers, including Afghan youth, to register beneficiaries and provide life-saving relief at both the local and district levels.
