What is Our Grand Challenge?
Over a thousand people have died and 1500 are severely injured from an earthquake that struck Paktika, Paktia, and Khost provinces on June 22nd, 2022 at 01:30 AFT. The earthquake has caused widespread devastation with thousands left homeless and without any shelter. The death toll is rising by the hour. People are left to search for any potential survivors and bodies of missing family members under the rubble. Many have lost more than one family member. Access to basic medical care, food, and clean water is scarce.
Aseel has launched its campaign to seek urgent donations for the victims of the earthquake in Paktika, Paktia, and Khost. We are rapidly preparing to reach the scene of the earthquake. We have already contacted victims in Paktika and spoke to Laiq Khan, a resident of Wachakai village located in the Gayan district of Paktika. Seven members of his family have been killed while 11 are severely injured. In his interview, he said, “More than 600 people are dead here, and more than 800 others are injured. Houses are ruined. People have lost their shelters. There is no food to eat or clean water to drink. People need food, tents, clothes, and other necessary items.”
Our preliminary findings show that many have been displaced and left without basic food and shelter. Aseel will provide a customized relief package that includes food items (Flour, Rice, Daal, Beans, Green Tea, Sugar, and Oil), Hygiene items (Hygiene packs, Shampoo, Soap, Toothpaste, and Brush), and a Tent and Blanket for the affected families in Eastern provinces. Each one of these packages will cost us around $150. We are fully accountable for every penny you donate and will report on the distributions through our social media accounts and website.

Methods
Step 1:
Identification
The ASEEL team first identifies provinces and then focuses on districts and villages to identify the victims of the earthquake who need assistance. In addition, the team identifies healthcare centres at an equal distance to maximize coverage areas.
Step 2:
Coordination and Supply
The ASEEL team coordinates with the volunteers, locals and health centres by supplying food packages and shelters. The mobilisation of these local efforts makes it easier to supply aid time effectively.
Transparency and Accountability
All participants in the ASEEL grand challenge" Urgent Appeal: Earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan", including technical contributors such as doctors, campaign owners, partner organizations, and volunteers, are provided with bi-weekly updates, including financial data and how many food packages have been distributed. Also, financial records from every report will be made public in real time.
For universal transparency throughout the platform and to track every dollar, the Emergency Response team developed version ASEEL ER V1.0, providing Omid (Hope) IDs using the Omid card to track each beneficiary. The Omid IDs are pre-registered as soon as a beneficiary is identified.
The second version, ASEEL ER V2.0, currently being developed by the ASEEL team, has two additional modules: one for certified vendors (Vendor Module) designed for local supermarkets to distribute ASEEL food packages in the community. The other (Lifesavers Module) will enable pre-approved volunteers, including Afghan youth, to use the platform to register beneficiaries, which will provide life-saving relief at the local and district levels.
