At a time when Afghanistan should be welcoming the renewal of spring, millions of its people are returning not by choice, but by force. Over 3 million Afghan refugees are being deported from Pakistan—abruptly, and in most cases, without the chance to take anything with them. No clothes, no savings, no shelter. Only memories of a life they were forced to leave behind.
The story of Afghan refugees in Pakistan isn’t new. Since the Soviet invasion in 1979, waves of Afghan families have crossed into Pakistan, seeking safety. Over the decades, millions stayed, raising children, working jobs, and building lives. All while living in limbo.
International donors funneled billions of dollars into Pakistan to help support these refugees—funds intended to cover housing, education, and health. But the reality on the ground never matched the rhetoric. Many refugees lived in poverty, undocumented, and underserved, with basic rights often denied.
Despite these challenges, Afghan refugees managed to persevere. Their lives were built on resilience, not on handouts.
Today, decades of perseverance are being dismantled overnight. Families are being pushed across the border without warning. Their possessions were left behind. Their homes were confiscated. They arrive in a country still reeling from economic collapse, natural disasters, and limited infrastructure.
Spring in Afghanistan usually signals the return of color and growth. But for many of these returnees, it means exposure to new risks—malnutrition, poor sanitation, and a lack of medical care, especially for children and women. The journey home has not brought peace. It has exposed them to deeper uncertainty.
As a tech company born in Afghanistan, Aseel is uniquely positioned to respond fast and effectively. We’ve mobilized our emergency response team to key border crossings like Torkham and Spin Boldak, where we’re identifying and registering families through our OMID ID system.
