Banowan Shams, founded by Shakira Shams, is a women-led tailoring and handicraft brand rooted in Afghan tradition. A graduate of Kabul University in Dari language and literature and a national television reporter for 18 years, Shakira turned her passion for sewing—learned at age 20 and refined through training in Iran—into a thriving business. Starting with six employees, she has grown Banowan Shams into a workshop producing handmade attire for children and traditional Afghan women’s wear for parties, weddings, and cultural events. With nearly 200 unique designs available through Aseel, Banowan Shams blends craftsmanship with cultural heritage, using hand and leather embroidery to create timeless pieces. Shakira’s vision is to expand into international markets while empowering more Afghan women through employment and financial independence. She believes Afghan handmade clothing resonates globally—not only with tourists who admire its authenticity but also with Afghans abroad who cherish their traditions.
