About the Campaign
Herat Province in Afghanistan’s Western Region was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake before noon on 7 October, again by an earthquake of the same magnitude in the early morning of 11 October 2023, and a third in the morning of 15 October. All three earthquakes were followed by a series of aftershocks. It was the humanitarian crisis that occurred in the Herat province, and the majority of women and girls suffering from anxiety, depression, and stress. Around 1,400 people have been killed and more than 1,800 injured, according to official figures. Several villages in the province were destroyed and completely flattened, with Zinda Jan district being the most affected. The survivors are currently sleeping in tents next to the rubble remains of their homes, with injured in hospitals. Exacerbating the situation, a severe storm struck on the evening of 12 October in Zinda Jan district, displacing 300 households from various villages to Herat City. Therefore, AWDREO wants to support the communities impacted by the earthquake and will provide psychological counseling for the affected women and girls.
