Afghan Lajaward Arts
Zalgai Usmani started his journey as a crafter in 2020 when he founded Afghan Lajaward Handicrafts at 19. With a passion for the arts, Zalgai had nurtured his talent throughout his youth, eventually graduating from university with a degree in the arts, specializing in miniature and designing art. Zalgai pursued a one-year program at the ADA Institute to further hone his skills, sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy. Under the guidance of esteemed mentors from the Gholam Mohammad Mimene Gei Conservatory, Ashyaneh Institute, and Firozkoh Institute, he immersed himself in artistry. Driven by his ambition to showcase the authentic arts of Afghanistan to the world, Zalgai delved into extensive research. He sought to uncover art forms deeply rooted in Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage, such as Nuristani miniature artwork and the intricate artwork associated with the beautiful province of Herat. Zalgai was determined to introduce these artistic traditions to a global audience. As his brand began to take shape, Zalgai remained committed to preserving the heritage of Afghan craftsmanship. Today, Afghan Lajaward Handicrafts employs eleven artisans, predominantly talented and dedicated females. These artisans contribute indirectly to various business operations and tasks, breathing life into the brand's vision. The company's distinct identity is rooted in using Archa and Walnut wood, skillfully adorned with Nuristani carvings and gilding. The artisans' creativity shines through in the intricate miniature work featuring animals and birds. Afghan Lajaward Handicrafts ensures that each product stands out from the rest. The raw materials are sourced from wood-importing companies in Kabul, upholding the brand's commitment to supporting local industries. Unfortunately, the work ban on female artisans has posed a significant challenge to the brand. With more than half the workforce affected, Zalgai remains dedicated to empowering these artisans by expanding sales and connecting with international customers. Operating under the motto of "quality, beauty, and creativity show your taste with our variety," Afghan Lajaward Handicrafts consistently caters to the unique preferences of its customers. Understanding that individual tastes differ, the brand tailors its offerings accordingly, ensuring customer satisfaction. Zalgai envisions showcasing Nooristani art on the global stage and adding a touch of variety to Afghanistan's authentic skills, particularly miniature and gilding. In line with their future aspirations, Afghan Lajaward Handicrafts envisions establishing the largest engraving factory in Afghanistan and the surrounding region. Through this ambitious endeavor, Zalgai hopes to promote Afghan products worldwide, proudly bearing the name of Afghanistan and showcasing the country's remarkable artistic heritage.
